Affiliate Program Promotion & Recruitment Checklist

So you’ve got your affiliate program set up. Now’s the time to start promoting your program and recruiting new affiliates

Promotion Ideas

1. Publish Attractive Conversion Rates:

If you have a great conversion rate through affiliate traffic, make sure to publish it. If affiliates know your product converts readily, they will be more likely to promote your product.

2. Publish Attractive Earnings Per Click Info:

For example, If your average affiliate earns $2.23 per click share this valuable information.

3. Publish Attractive Average Earnings Per Sale Info:

If your affiliates earn a pretty decent average commission on each sale (for example, if your average sale is $120 per sale and your affiliate gets $60 for each one), that is valuable information for your potential affiliate.

4. Offer Performance-Based Incentives:

Offer increased commissions for affiliates who perform according to specific standards.

5. Offer Training:

If there are plenty of popular sites in your niche, but many of the site owners aren’t quite sure how to market affiliate products, offer them special group training so they can start earning from their websites.

6. Payment Frequency:

If you pay your affiliates more frequently, it can be an attractive option. Monthly payment is standard, but consider bi-weekly or weekly.

7. Be Available:

Make sure it’s clear to affiliates there is always someone to contact when they need help.

8. Offer Custom Promotions:

Banners and ads are not a one-size-fits-all thing. Make sure your affiliates know they can contact you and get help for customized promotions.

Recruitment Tips

1. Put a Link in Your Site Navigation:

Make sure there is a link to your affiliate program on every page of your website.

Affiliate program etiquette suggests the link is subtle and is placed inconspicuously (on the bottom of the page, for example).

You don’t want your affiliates to send traffic to your site and have their referrals presented with a huge promotion to join your affiliate program.

You want to make sure that their referrals are focused on buying the product, so your affiliate can earn the commission.

2. Invite Your Customers:

Some software programs automatically sign your customers up to your affiliate program.

If this process isn’t automated, always invite your customers to your program.

After all, it’s easy to recommend a product they have already tried and like.

3. Connect with Site Owners Targeting Your Market:

Whether it’s on Twitter, Facebook, face-to-face or on a forum, get to know sites in your niche.

The more people you know, the easier it is to get those people on board with your program.

4. Pay-Per-Click and Advertising:

Test out advertising options and track where your affiliates are coming from. For pay-per-click advertising, target keyword phrases like “[your niche or product] affiliate program”.

5. Contact Potential Affiliates Directly:

Sometimes the personal touch is what’s needed. You can email potential affiliates, but phoning or even snail mail might produce better results.

Find Potential Affiliates by:

a. Find sites that rank well for important keywords in Google

b. Look for site that have a high ranking at Alexa.com, but discount those who don’t as the Alexa numbers aren’t perfectly reliable.

c. Find sites that sell advertising as they usually publish their traffic and subscriber list numbers. That way, you can find ones with good traffic and nice-sized lists.

Tips for First Contact:

a. Get to know the potential affiliate’s website.

Understand who their audience is and try to discern what would attract the affiliate the most (for example: high commissions, good conversion, the assurance of a good product and customer service, etc.).

b. Offer a complimentary product/sample, etc.

Assure your potential affiliate that you have a good product, by allowing them to try it first.

c. Make suggestions on promotions that you think would be most effective for your potential affiliate.

Go the extra mile to show you’ve done your homework and have good ideas for the site owner to earn some commissions.

d. Know your numbers.

Make sure you know your conversion rates, average commission per sale and other metrics as they may ask.

Affiliate Program Creation Checklist

Starting a new affiliate program can seem overwhelming. This checklist helps ensure you cover everything to get your affiliate program started out on the right foot.

Choosing Your Software

Choosing the right software program for your affiliate program isn’t a decision to be taken lightly.

Here are some things you might consider when making your decision.

1. Trial / Demo:

Is there a free trial or demo you can try, so you can see the program in action and be sure it’s right for you?

2. Software or Network:

You can choose software to run your program or you can join an affiliate network.

An affiliate network provides you with a variety of tools, usually pays your affiliates on your behalf and allows you to be advertised in their network site.

It’s a slightly more hands-free option and may give your product added exposure, but it tends to the most expensive.

3. Web-Based Service or Software You Purchase:

If you decide to go with the software option, rather than an affiliate network, you have an additional decision to make.

There are many web-based services that charge you a monthly fee to use their service or you can purchase software you install on your server for a one-time fee.

A web-based service offers the benefit of ongoing updates and support, but tends to be the most expensive option between the two in the long run.

4. Cost:

Obviously, cost is always a consideration. While low-cost may be the right answer, don’t make your decision based on price only.

This is software you are going to be working with for a very long time.

5. Compatibility:

If you already have a shopping cart or other software you need compatibility with, make sure you confirm that first.

6. Multiple Online Stores Option:

If you run more than one business or have a reason to need more than one affiliate program, make sure your software supports this.

7. Tiered Structure:

Do you want to offer commissions on more than one level?

8. Per Product Commissions:

This feature allows you to set different commission amounts or percentages on a product to product basis.

9. Custom Commissions Per Affiliate:

Want to reward affiliates or give high-profile affiliates a boosted commission rate? This feature will make sure you can do that.

10. Tracking Links:

If you want affiliates to be able to track their specific promotions and ads, this feature is a must.

11. PayPal Mass Payment:

This feature allows you to pay all your affiliates instantly through PayPal and your affiliates won’t be charged any receiving fees.

 Setting up Your Program

1. Follow the Set up Process Completely:

Instructions will vary depending upon the software program you choose, but make sure you go through the entire set up, checking all the available customization options and more.

You will need to decide things like:

Commission ratesHow affiliates will be paidWhen they will be paidWill it be an open program or by invitation only? Will applications need approval?

2. Customize Emails:

Automated emails sent out by affiliate programs (welcome email, sales notification, payout information) are built in to many affiliate programs.

The problem is they’re often dull, may contain grammatical errors (if you’re using foreign-developed software) and just don’t inspire the affiliate to take action.

Make sure you go through these templates and customize them for best results.

3. Create Your Sign Up Page:

Most affiliate programs have a sign up form, but you need to make sure you create customized information that shares the details and great benefits of joining your program.

Include information like conversion rates, commissions per sale, when and how affiliates are paid, etc.

4. Create Your Thank You Page:

When an affiliate signs up, customize the thank you page if this feature is available. Make sure the affiliate know where to find links, has ideas for promotions and where they can ask questions.

5. Create or Add to Your Affiliate Tools Center:

Add things like text links, images, email links, Twitter posts, special reports, videos and more.
