Starting a new affiliate program can seem overwhelming. This checklist helps ensure you cover everything to get your affiliate program started out on the right foot.
Choosing Your Software
Choosing the right software program for your affiliate program isn’t a decision to be taken lightly.
Here are some things you might consider when making your decision.
1. Trial / Demo:
Is there a free trial or demo you can try, so you can see the program in action and be sure it’s right for you?
2. Software or Network:
You can choose software to run your program or you can join an affiliate network.
An affiliate network provides you with a variety of tools, usually pays your affiliates on your behalf and allows you to be advertised in their network site.
It’s a slightly more hands-free option and may give your product added exposure, but it tends to the most expensive.
3. Web-Based Service or Software You Purchase:
If you decide to go with the software option, rather than an affiliate network, you have an additional decision to make.
There are many web-based services that charge you a monthly fee to use their service or you can purchase software you install on your server for a one-time fee.
A web-based service offers the benefit of ongoing updates and support, but tends to be the most expensive option between the two in the long run.
4. Cost:
Obviously, cost is always a consideration. While low-cost may be the right answer, don’t make your decision based on price only.
This is software you are going to be working with for a very long time.
5. Compatibility:
If you already have a shopping cart or other software you need compatibility with, make sure you confirm that first.
6. Multiple Online Stores Option:
If you run more than one business or have a reason to need more than one affiliate program, make sure your software supports this.
7. Tiered Structure:
Do you want to offer commissions on more than one level?
8. Per Product Commissions:
This feature allows you to set different commission amounts or percentages on a product to product basis.
9. Custom Commissions Per Affiliate:
Want to reward affiliates or give high-profile affiliates a boosted commission rate? This feature will make sure you can do that.
10. Tracking Links:
If you want affiliates to be able to track their specific promotions and ads, this feature is a must.
11. PayPal Mass Payment:
This feature allows you to pay all your affiliates instantly through PayPal and your affiliates won’t be charged any receiving fees.
Setting up Your Program
1. Follow the Set up Process Completely:
Instructions will vary depending upon the software program you choose, but make sure you go through the entire set up, checking all the available customization options and more.
You will need to decide things like:
Commission ratesHow affiliates will be paidWhen they will be paidWill it be an open program or by invitation only? Will applications need approval?2. Customize Emails:
Automated emails sent out by affiliate programs (welcome email, sales notification, payout information) are built in to many affiliate programs.
The problem is they’re often dull, may contain grammatical errors (if you’re using foreign-developed software) and just don’t inspire the affiliate to take action.
Make sure you go through these templates and customize them for best results.
3. Create Your Sign Up Page:
Most affiliate programs have a sign up form, but you need to make sure you create customized information that shares the details and great benefits of joining your program.
Include information like conversion rates, commissions per sale, when and how affiliates are paid, etc.
4. Create Your Thank You Page:
When an affiliate signs up, customize the thank you page if this feature is available. Make sure the affiliate know where to find links, has ideas for promotions and where they can ask questions.
5. Create or Add to Your Affiliate Tools Center:
Add things like text links, images, email links, Twitter posts, special reports, videos and more.
